Waël C. Hanna is an Associate Professor of Surgery at McMaster University’s Michael DeGroote Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Hanna is Head of the Service of Endoscopy, and Director of the Boris Family Centre for Robotic Surgery, and Director of the Thoracic Surgery Teaching Unit at McMaster University. He received his medical degree from McGill University School of Medicine, and completed training in general surgery at McGill, followed by thoracic surgery at the University of Toronto. He also completed the American Association for Thoracic Surgery’s F.G. Pearson Travelling Fellowship in advanced endoscopy at the University of Montreal.

Dr. Hanna’s clinical practice includes the care of patients with thoracic malignancies of the lung and esophagus. The majority of his operations are done robotically or endoluminally with advanced endoscopic techniques. His clinical research interests include advanced techniques in robotic surgery, artificial intelligence applications in endoscopy, and randomized clinical trials.

Dr. Hanna serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and Frontiers in surgery. He sits on the Executive Committee of the Canadian Association of Thoracic Surgeons and is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
