Professor Wright is the Director of Surgical Oncology at St Vincent’s Hospital, and Thoracic Surgical Lead at the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre. He obtained his PhD in molecular biology of lung cancer from the University of Melbourne and is now an associate professor in the University Department of Surgery.

In the last 15 years, Professor Wright has conducted clinical trials (investigator-initiated and intergroup) and translational research in lung cancer and lung surgery generally, resulting in about 100 publications. He has been a pioneer of complex video-assisted thoracic surgical techniques in Australasia and has convened an annual VATS course for cardiothoracic surgeons in the region. He is recognized as a leader in VATS having performed over 1000 lung resections and over 150 thymectomies, including robotic assistance.

Internationally, Professor Wright has collaborated with researchers in Europe, United Kingdom and United States, and has professional links with Sun Yat Sen University of Medical Sciences Cancer Center in Guangzhou, initially through Project China of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He is Co-Chair of the annual Guangzhou International Lung Cancer Forum and Sino-Australian Cancer Conference.
