Jaroslaw Kużdżał, PhD, FETCS

Prof. Kużdżał studied medicine in Cracow, Poland, and completed his training in general surgery. Since 1996, he devoted himself to thoracic surgery (Board Exam in 2000). He received his PhD in 2002, and became Fellow of the European Board of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons (FETCS) in 2005. Since 2009, he serves as chief of thoracic surgery in John Paul II Hospital, Cracow, and since 2010, as head of the department of Thoracic Surgery at the Jagiellonian University Collegium Medicum. In 2014, he passed the Board Exam in oncological surgery and received the title of Professor.
Prof. Kużdżał is member of several national and international medical societies, including ESTS, AATS, IASLC. For the last 10 years, he has been particularly involved in the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons, serving the Society as Councillor, Director of Annual Meeting and President.
Prof. Kużdżał’s scientific interest has been focusing on mediastinal staging of lung cancer, mesothelioma, chest wall reconstructions, and oesophageal surgery. He authored 121 publications with IF of 103, and almost 600 citations.
Educational activities have been always in the centre of Prof. Kuzdzal’s professional life. He has been involved in teaching medical students and nurses, and in postgraduate training programmes of surgeons and pulmonologists. He is active as a teacher during courses organised by ESTS, ESTRO and ESMO. He was initiator and editor of the textbook Principles of Surgery and, recently, of the ESTS Textbook of Thoracic Surgery.
Prof. Kużdżał has always guarded high ethical standards of medical profession. He is known for his uncompromising stance in defence of patients’ rights and Hippocratic principles of medicine.
